https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/treasure-cabinetDiscovered recently in the South of France is this wonderful antique French sculpture that dates from the mid 19th century. It is a beautifully carved white marble based on the renowned Baroque sculpture by Stefano Maderno [1576 – 1636] of St Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome, created in the 1600. St. Cecilia was the Roman saint who was executed for baptising her fellow Romans and as such became a martyr for Christianity. The statue displays the saint lying on her side with her dress tucked between her knees in a Baroque art style. It measures about 9.5 x 34 x 15.5 cm or approximately 3.7 x 13.3 x 6.1 inches and it is in lovely antique condition with signs of ageing mainly noticeable in a few smaller chips which in my opinion only brings forth its true beauty and splendour today. This is a remarkable treasure of poignant beauty that is exactly as I discovered it recently in Pezenas in the South of France. For the full condition please refer to the images!
