Item Details

A unique opportunity to purchase a pair of 18th century winged sphinx statues or gate pier ornaments, originally from High Head Castle, Cumbria. These date to the remodelling of the house 1744 – 48, thought to be by the renowned architect James Gibbs. A replacement pair can be seen in position on the gate piers to the front elevation of the castle.

CONDITION REPORT
In good overall condition. Showing wear and weathering consistent with age and use. Wings re-carved. There have been repairs and restorations to some areas. The wings have been re-carved. These will need to be leaded into the bodies once they have been positioned.
