Item Details

An antique French bronze sculpture depicting a mother and child, in the manner of Jean-Jacques Pradier.

Dating to the late 19th century, this standing figure is depicted playing affectionately with the infant on a fountain.

Stood on a stepped rectangular base, this impressive sculpture is impressed with the foundry stamp 'SUSSE FRES’.

In Neoclassical style, the patinated bronze of this piece gives a striking lustrous finish.

This decorative antique is a stunning feature for a period property looking to appreciate French craftsmanship.

Jean-Jacques Pradier

Jean-Jacques (James) Pradier was a French sculptor, born in Geneva into a Protestant family, who had fled to Switzerland on the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
Throughout his career he was well supported by orders from Court and sculpted various royals.

In 1824, he sculpted the bust of Louis XVIII and that of Louis-Philippe in 1834, as well as many statues of Duke Ferdinand d’Orléans.

The classical look and complete fluency of his work led to his nickname “the last of the Greeks”.
