This 19th century buff terracotta fountain sees a boy sitting on a stylised dolphin supported by a simulated rock base, the water designed to playfully spout from the dolphin's mouth!
Blanchard was one of Britain's leading manufacturers of terracotta during the 19th century. Following an apprenticeship at the Coade factory, Mark Henry Blanchard established his own business in Blackfriar's Road, Lambeth in circa 1840. The firm specialised in statuary pieces, vases, busts and architectural details and even acquired important contracts including a commission from the Victoria and Albert Museum for architectural ornaments. At the Great Exhibition of 1851, Blanchard received a number of awards, inspiring none other than John Marriott Blashfield to set up a competing terracotta business.
CONDITION REPORT
