Item Details

A large early 18th century carved gilt wood eagle, mounted on a square red velvet covered plinth.

Originally used as a lectern adornment, this architectural eagle ornament is deeply carved with details of the eagle with wings outspread still clear and distinguishable after more than 290 years.

At the same time, it shows its age with an attractive timeworn look, and distressed gilding in areas that only adds to its unique beauty.

Thought to resemble the depiction of an eagle once viewed as a symbol of power and immortality in ancient Rome, this grand sculpture would look particularly striking situated as a feature piece in a reception room, office or hallway.

Good structural condition. Old hanging hook to the reverse. Worn gilding, retouched in places. Chips, scuffs and scratches associated with age and use. Relatively stable on the plinth. Small amount of movement from the eagle but this could be manipulated back into position. Appears to have minor historic repairs and losses.
