https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/uk-heritageA large antique Copeland tile depicting a cherub and lion.
This 8 inch clay tile dates to circa 1876, displaying a putti with a cape holding a fruiting cornucopia before a lion in multi-coloured glaze on rich blue background. The scene is to be read as an emblem of strength tamed by love.
This striking Neoclassical tile has been in use for over 150 years and as such has a characterful, timeworn look. The perfect decorative feature for modern and period properties looking to add vibrancy and charm.
Copeland
Copeland & Garrett made encaustic decorative and floor tiles, copying medieval designs but not using traditional colours.
These proved unpopular and production of them soon ceased.
From 1847, the business relationship between William Taylor Copeland and Thomas Garrett ended and Copeland produced alone, until his sons joined to create W. T. Copeland & Sons Ltd in 1867.
They manufactured fine tiles, jug stands, vases and ceramic tableware. Copeland received world-wide recognition for this refined statuary porcelain.
