Item Details

A large antique framed ceramic plaque depicting a court scene.

This is an exquisite plaque originating from the French pottery Creil et Montereau.

Housed in a handsome oak frame, the painted figures are depicted in 16th century dress in the setting of a court room, huddled in awe of an elaborate bird.

Dating to circa 1900, it is a stunning antique tile panel for a home, perfect for placement on an interior wall as a decorative art feature.

Creil et Montereau

The pottery of Creil (Oise), founded in 1797, was so famous it was quoted by Gustave Flaubert in his book “l’education sentimentale”.

Production took off in the early 19th century thanks to its new owner St Cricq Casale.

However, in 1840, the years of Casale’s death, the factory merged with Montereau (Seine et Marne), and the company becomes Creil and Monterey Faïenceries.

Production with the mark Creil et Montereau continued until 1920, when it then changed to Hippolyte Boulanger Creil et Montereau (HBCM).
