Item Details

A whimsical 1916 antique lead bird bath by late 19th/ early 20th century sculptor, Phoebe Stabler (signed). Known for her glazed pottery figures produced by the likes of Royal Doulton, this lead bird bath is a unique find, perhaps made for a private garden commission.

It features a round bird bath with sweeping edges to form a triangular shape with a single nude cherub at each corner. The three cherubs or putti sit or lean playfully around the bath, some lounging towards the water and others playing at the edge.

Lightly weathered and distorted by the exposure to the elements over many years, this antique bird bath will make a beautiful feature of a traditionally styled 21st century garden.

PHOEBE STABLER

Phoebe Stabler (1879-1955) was a sculptor in metal, stone, terracotta and pottery. Studying at London’s Royal College of Art, some of Stabler’s most notable works were pottery figures fired in rich glazes. These were produced by the likes of Poole Pottery, Royal Worcester and Royal Doulton.

Her initial works were exhibited under her maiden name McLeish before she married her husband, the ceramist, Harold Stabler, in 1906. From 1912, Harold and Phoebe established a kiln in Hammersmith, London, where they worked together to produce a range of decorative works, including garden ornaments.
