Item Details

A handsome, late seventeenth century copper-alloy candlestick, identified in The Lear Collection as from a group with ‘Pronounced Knops………of 17th Century France’; the most similar to this example being No. 128 although that one is ‘unpierced’. In common with No.128 and others in the group, this candlestick has been made employing the casting method of ‘coring’ whereby in order to save the expensive and difficult to produce zinc brass, the large and costly to make central knop is cast with a core of shaped clay suspended on an iron rod. Once the casting is cooled this core is broken up and removed, the iron rod, or at least’s its ends, are left in place.

This candlestick with a braized crack to the edge of the foot.
