Actaeon Watching Diana and Her Nymphs Bathing, a popular subject for artists since the renaissance here engraved by John Smith (1652-1742) after the work by Pierre Berchet (1660-1720, working initially in France and from the 1690’s in England). The mezzotint was originally published around 1705, here laid onto glass and reverse painted, within the original ‘Hogarth’ carved and parcel-gilt frame, English circa 1760.

Another popular story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the story tells the fate of the young hunter, Actaeon. Having looked upon the chaste Artemis, (known to the Romans as Diana), he is transformed by her into a deer before fleeing the scene, is then hunted down by his own hounds and killed, the dogs having failed to recognise their master.
