Charming and naive, King Charles’ window at Carisbrooke Castle, depicted in the coloured sands of the Isle of Wight by Albert E. Neat, third in the family line of sand picture makers, son of John Neat Jr and grandson of John Neate Sr. Finely framed in rosewood with a burnished gilt sight.

In the 19th century, Queen Victoria brought her court to the Isle of Wight making her holiday home at Osborne. Wealthy Victorians followed and a tourism industry grew promoting places of interest to visit with makers of souvenirs to satisfy a resulting demand. These little sand pictures are a case in point, cleverly crafted souvenir views of these interesting places made using the famous coloured sands found at Alum Bay. The Neate family were able to sustain three generations of artists able to supplement their incomes making these tiny pictures throughout the middle decades of the 19th century.
