Item Details

William Pitt the Younger, (1759-1806) was Prime Minister of England for a total of 19 years over two administrations. Due to the Reign of Terror in France and fearing a similar revolt in England, Pitt stepped back from his more liberal policies declaring war on France in 1793. Having resigned from office in 1801, he accepted the king’s request to return to the position when fear of a French invasion was on the rise. It was Pitt’s prosecution of the war with France that called for the growth of Nelson’s Navy and hence the admiral’s victory at Trafalgar.

These two images are die-stamped versions of William Wyon’s medals that he produced some years after the events, in 1813.

Within black papier-mâché frames with gilt metal bezels. The bezels with a diameter of 2.5 inches. The frames 4.5 inches square.
