A portrait of a young officer in a British regiment of foot, painted by Jacob Axel Gillberg and dated 1795, inscribed to the reverse Genl Buller.
Within an ebonized beechwood frame with a gilt metal bezel. o.s:4.5 in x 3.75 in.
Jacob Axel Gillberg (Dec.1769-Oct. 1845) was a Swedish portrait miniaturist as well as an army officer. From 1790 he spent some years in Europe traveling between Holland, France, England and Belgium studying under the miniaturist Marie de Latour. It seems that during this period he also enlisted as a Captain in the army becoming a military draughtsman like his father before him.
