John Prescott Knight entered the RA schools in 1823 and went on to exhibit 227 works over the coming years; becoming a council member of the RA in 1836. He established a successful practice painting portraits including sitters such as Sir Walter Scott, John Bright MP, TS Cooper RA, Charles Barry RA and Sir Charles Eastlake PRA. In his book, The History of the Royal Academy, Sandby describes Knight’s portraits as being painted ‘with a vigorous hand, a broad touch, good effects of colour, and all the expression necessary to distinguish them as striking portraits’.
