Sigismund Goetze (1885-1938) established himself as a portrait painter, later turning to landscape. Born in London, from 1888 he was a regular exhibitor at the RA and throughout his life was a great patron of the arts. At the death of his friend, Alfred Gilbert, (1934) he assisted The National Arts Fund in purchasing for the nation Gilbert's collection and helped in the distribution to various public collections. Between 1912 and 1921 Goetze completed a series of murals for the Foreign Office which he gifted to the nation.
