Item Details
Built in 1881 by Barrow Ship Building Co. for the Inman Line, City of Rome was a huge disappointment and was returned to the builders after just six voyages. Anchor Line then managed her on various routes until 1900, initially for their Liverpool-New York route, but the lack of a running mate rendered this venture unprofitable. Genuinely considered one of the most beautiful liners ever to cross the Western Ocean, she was scrapped in 1902.
A finely executed model of the ocean liner City of Rome displayed on a painted paper and cotton wool sea set within a mirrored case with a gilt gesso frame.
