Item Description
A heavy duty hand painted wooden sign from the Trentham Estate, Staffordshire, installed to discourage fishing on the mile long serpentine lake installed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in 1759.
A private estate from 1599, the last house on the site was demolished in 1912, five years after long term residents the Dukes of Sutherland had abandoned it in favour of their other homes. The family opened the gardens to the public in 1910 and the estate remains a popular attraction today.
English, early C20th.
