Item Description
Original oil painting of 'Leda & The Swan' by French artist Yves Diey (1892-1984).
Signed lower right. Inscribed 'Leda' to the rear and signed.
Part of the post-impressionist school, Jacques Yves Paul Dieÿ was a French painter born June 28, 1892, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris and died July 22, 1984, in Montluçon. Diey studied Fine Arts in Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais, where he received a special award in 1942. He was influenced by the Swiss painter, Hans Berger and by Louis-Francois Biloul. Known for portraiture, his favourite subject was the female nude and his works are marked by their sensuality.
Leda & The Swan: In the myth, the god Zeus turned into a swan and seduced Leda, Queen of Sparta. That event had huge consequences, according to classical mythology: Leda's intercourse with the swan and then with her husband, King Tyndareus, resulted in two eggs, from which hatched Helen, Clytemnestra and the twins Castor and Pollux.
