Item Description
Pair of 19th century beautiful marine candlesticks made by, the renown French silversmiths, Christofle for the prestigious French shipping and cruise ship company, Compagnie des Messageries Maritime. Circa late 19th/early 20th century.
These heavily weighted candle holders are beautifully decorated with engraved bulrushes around the stem and to the top, floral and foliate motifs.
The Coat of Arms of the shipping company with laurel wreath to each side is engraved to the base. It features a crowned unicorn head in rampart wall on a marine anchor.
A symbol of power, the unicorn, considered an auspicious animal, is the emblem of the ships of the Compagnie des Messageries Maritime [1851-1977].
Beautifully worn silverplate on brass.
