Item Description
Early 19th Century unsigned framed oil portrait on canvas of a young woman from Normandy or Brittany wearing a lace head dress and ruff style collar, which came from a chateau in Northern France.
Although the canvas is presently backed on a 'papier maché' board, with visible handwriting from the 19th century, it is also showing the markings of original wooden back boards or wall panelling..
Measures 25 x 35 inches ( 63 x 88 cms) In acceptable condition as shown. From France circa 1820-1880. The painting is unsigned. The frame is surmounted with an incomplete carved wooden pediment which makes one think that this was one of a series of paintings in architectural frames possibly from a panelled room in the chateau.
