Item Description
A very fine, late 18th-century George III period figured mahogany sideboard, crafted in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster. It features a moulded, stepped platform top with opening sliding doors in the form of drawers. The tambour doors in the superstructure slide open to reveal spacious cupboards, flanked by highly figured, flamed mahogany panels. The base comprises two shaped, oak-lined long drawers, a central oak-lined drawer, and two deep, bow-fronted oak-lined drawers, one fitted with a cellaret. The sideboard stands on six elegantly tapered, reeded mahogany legs.
This piece boasts an outstanding colour and patina, and its size, style, and exceptional timber quality suggest it was likely a special commission.
The Gillow family, renowned for their contributions to British cabinetmaking in the 18th and 19th centuries, built a legacy of high-quality furniture made from the finest woods in elegant, practical designs, often featuring inventive mechanisms. With branches in both London (established in 1770) and the provinces, Gillows’ prominence and influence were widely recognized in the furniture industry.
