Item Description
A mid 19th-century two-tier mahogany Lazy Susan. Each tier is beautifully grained and features a moulded pie-crust edge, which is slightly raised for better utility. The top is supported on a hand-turned stepped base, creating a lovely form and a beautifully balanced design.A Lazy Susan, also known as a dumb waiter, was a practical dining accessory. The top tier is static and likely held a vase of flowers or a table decoration, while the bottom tier rotates, allowing food and drink to be moved conveniently across the table without the need for unseemly reaching. Lazy Susans were particularly useful for intimate meals or tea times when privacy was desired, minimizing the need for staff to attend. As the 19th century progressed and households employed fewer servants, such devices became invaluable labor-saving tools. This Lazy Susan has retained its original patina and is in good condition, with some old restorations visible in the images. It dates to around 1850.
