Item Description
Charming example of a pretty American side chair, famously designed and made by Lambert Hitchcock, who opened his chair business in the 1820s. He was the first to mass produce these lovely chairs. They were nearly always painted black with hand painted stenciled backs depicting fruit and flowers and with rush seats. Traditionally they were made in maple, beech or birch. This model is from the second half of the 19th century and is still a very desirable and decorative chair. c.1860
