Item Description

A very rare, large 19th century terracotta low planter, probably for bulbs by John Mathews, Royal Pottery, Weston Super Mare. In good condition, with serrated rim and lattice work decoration, fully stamped.

Weston Pottery was born from two terracotta brick and tile manufacturers, owned by Charles Phillips and John Harvey merging in 1847. It was at this point that they began to produce garden ornaments and flowerpots and exhibited their wares at the Great Exhibition of 1851. They gained recognition for their work, counting Kew Gardens and The Royal Parks as prominent customers. Phillips retired in 1871 and was succeeded by John Mathews, who ran the company for eighteen years until his retirement.
