Item Description

A very unusual late 18th/ early 19th century French Directoire commode made from fruitwood, walnut and chestnut, the commode constructed from the two front panels of a pair of 17th century Augsburg cabinets inlaid in various rare veneers depicting mythical scenes of antiquity to the top and drawer fronts. Each escutcheon is cut differently and each key and lock are cut differently and retaining all three original keys, the top and front richly inlaid in geometric forms of buildings of antiquity, plants , fruit, animals, birds, serpents and musical instruments.

By the late 18th century Augsburg cabinets had largely fallen out of fashion, although now highly valued and sort after.
