20th Century British Heraldry Coat Arms Of Chester Plaster Wall Crest Sculpture Cased.
Subject Heraldic Armorial Plaster Coat Of Arms For Chester.
Heavy quality, handmade from out of plaster, set in a fine wood case with glass cover.
A charming size with the case being 51 cm high and 32.5 cm wide.
Circa late 20th century.
The Motto on the arms "ANTIQUI COLANT ANTIQUUM DIERUM" translates as: "Let the ancients worship the Ancient of Days") was added by Flower, in 1580.. The motto is found in many places around the city including on the City Arms in Frodsham Street, on 27 Northgate Street, on the Suspension Bridge, the City Baths and on the former park-keeper's lodge in Grosvenor Park. Possible masonic origin.
The armorial bearings are based on the original arms that was granted during the reign of Elizabeth I in1580. The modern arms were granted by the College of Arms in 1977. The shield contains half the arms of England Gules, 3 lions rampant Or and half of the arms of the Earldom of Chester, Azure, 3 wheatsheaves Or.
The border is gold and contains acorns, which represent the rural surrounding area. The animals around the shield are known as the supporters. The left sided animal is one of the golden lions of England. On the other right side is the white wolf of the first Norman Earl of Chester Hugh Lupus, Lupus is Latin for wolf. In the area above the shield are two oak branches and in the centre is a sword which is part of the Lord Mayor’s regalia. Representing the combined Chester Borough local authorities in 1974.
The City’s motto is over 400 years old and is in Latin.

Condition report offered in fine charming used condition, the case having various scuffs grazes, scratches, chips, general wear in places commensurate with usage & age.
