Item Description
Chinese Qing Porcelain Glazed Dragons Yellow Ground Tianqiuping Vase With Yongzheng Seal Mark.
Having a globular body which rises up to a slim cylindrical neck, the body has been superbly painted in rich green tones, depicting mighty ferocious dragons who are in blue green, aubergine and turquise colours, with small eyes beneath heavy brows and flaring nostrils flanked by long curly whiskers, their mouths are open to show menacing teeth, surmounted by prominent long horns swept back, with undulating scaly bodies ending in powerful muscular limbs and each having 5 sharp claws. The base bordered with a band of green and white waves. The rim bordered with a top green ring and geometric shapes, all reserved against a yellow ground which continues over the rim into the interior, underneath to the the base is a similarly ground outer yellow ring, with an inner white unglazed centre, having a twin dark blue inner rings with an inscribed blue six-character seal mark for Yongzheng.
A Magnificent Yellow-Ground Dragon Tianqiuping Visually striking this magnificent vase showcases the grandeur of a Qianlong Emperors style design and his legitimacy to the throne as the ‘Son of Heaven’. The symbolism of the vase is evident in its shape the globular represents heaven. The ancient Chinese believed the Earth was flat and that China was the middle kingdom, making the emperor an intermediary between heaven and Earth, known as tianqiuping or Celestial Sphere vase.
The Chinese rulers believed they ruled by heavenly mandate and that every element of the present piece serves symbolically to affirm Qianlong as emperor, from the tianqiuping form to the yellow enamel ground.
