Wildlife Oil Painting Skein Of Brent Geese Morning Flying Over Marsh The Fens South Holland Lincolnshire By Hugh Cecil Charles Monahan. Title “Morning Flight of Brent Geese over the Bombing Range at Holbeach Marsh” by Hugh Cecil Charles Monahan C1954. Subject ornithology animal bird study of a large team of flying Brent Geese in full side profile view in mid flight, flying in formation over the known historic Holbeach marsh area during sunrise early morning time. with wetlands below & low flat laying brown land & treeline off in the distance. Above a mix of light blue sky with golden sunlight on the horizon with grey scattered clouds higher up. You will love the different hue colours, greys, blues, white, maroon, golden yellow, brown & black.  A rather nice display size with the frame being 77.5 cm wide and 67 cm high. Medium oil on canvas. Set in the original traditional decorative frame. Signed by the known Irish/Canadian artist Hugh Monahan. In our opinion this is one of his rather exceptional works.

Artist biography Hugh Cecil Charles Monahan a known Irish/Canadian artist who was born in the year 1914 just after the beginning of WW1, he was born and brought up in Dublin in Ireland. It was known that his family moved & he then grew up in the sub-continent India as his father career was in the civil service. When he was older is parents wanted him to attend a boarding school back in England in the north west region. He did go back home once a year to spend some time with his parents during the Christmas holidays. Monahan did attend the Royal Hibernian art Academy. He loved working with oils and especially adored creating landscape scenes that had wildfowl with immense atmosphere. He produced a feeling of movements in his works.

Monahan combined realism together with a touch of impressionism to make full advantage of the use of light. He has exhibited in various galleries around Ireland & museums also in England in the capital London. Later in adult life he moved with his wife and children where he emigrated to Canada to the province of British Columbia & settled in the City of Vancouver. He died towards the end of 1970 when he was about to go on a sporting hunt for ducks. Monahan’s works have sold at auctions around the world.
The brant or brent goose (Branta bernicla) is a small goose of the genus Branta.There are three subspecies, all of which winter along temperate-zone sea-coasts and breed on the high-Arctic tundra. The brant is a small goose with a short, stubby bill. It measures 55–66 cm (22–26 in) long, 106–121 cm (42–48 in) across the wings and weighs 0.88–2.2 kg (1.9–4.9 lb). The under-tail is pure white, and the tail black and very short (the shortest of any goose).

The body of the dark-bellied nominate subspecies B. b. bernicla is fairly uniformly dark grey-brown all over, the flanks and belly not significantly paler than the back. The head and neck are black, with a small white patch on either side of the neck. With a population of about 250000, it breeds on the Arctic coasts of central and western Siberia and winters in coastal areas of western Europe, with over half the population in southern England, the rest between northern Germany and south-western France.
