19th Century Oval Oil Painting Trinity Church Liverpool By Moonlight By Walter Linsley Meegan.

Medium oil on board.
Subject nocturnal cityscape view of Trinity Church in Liverpool, the scene is breathtaking first with Trinity Church in the distance and the central street area is illuminated by the moonlight which is also captured brightly in the sky, with moonlight shining vertically along a line in the road, with further light coming at the end of the street by the tall street lamps. With figures walking along the road, Georgian era buildings on either flank which are set in darkness, creating a chiaroscuro effect.of contrasted light with shadow. Above a mainly cloudy night with small areas of blue.
Signed by the known artist Walter Meegan near the bottom side.
Circa 1890 late 19th century Victorian era.
In our opinion this is a great earlier example of his work.
Set in later oval decorative gilt frame.
A good display size with the frame being 43.5 cm wide and 45.5 cm high & 2.5 cm in depth.
Your first notice about this painting is the bright moon which illuminates the beach & sea & has such interesting perspective. You can really feel the peace and tranquility in this scene. The different blue, black, white, grey & yelllow hues are so vivid and and really stand out which you will adore.
In our opinion this is one of his very fine works.
Artist biography Walter Linsley Meegan a known listed British artist who was born in Hunslet by Leeds in Yorkshire Gods’ Own Country during the Victorian era in the year of 1859. His father was Henry Patrick Meegan & his mother Jane Linsley. He was from a large family with 10 siblings, he was known to have attended the Leeds school of art. He got married to Agnes Mahoney in 1881 and they had 9 children.
He also went to the Big Apple New York where he gained notoriety among fellow artists leading him to receive commissions from wealthy notable New York art collectors of the day for his great works. He came back to his home birthplace in Yorkshire after experiencing tragedy in his life, he loved the seaside especially Scarborough where he chose to live. Meegan became a pupil of the great John Atkinson Grimshaw who specialised in moonlit scenes, he was mentored by him at his very own art studio in Leeds. Meegans works reflect Grimshaw’s influence & often depict serene nightscapes of port cities especially Liverpool.
Meegan is considered to be Grimshaw’s stylist successor. His works have been exhibited and sold at auction houses around the world & fetch up to $20,400 US dollars which was for Brooklyn Bridge At Moonlight at Christie’s, the artist died during WW2 in 1944.
