Item Description
A pair of animated Medieval Gargoyles in Limestone English or possibly French 14th - early 15th century.
Their open growling and snarling toothed mouths contain working water spouts making them true Gargoyles rather than Grotesques. Their purpose was to throw rain water away from the edge of the Church or Cathedral, protecting the fragile limestone architectural structure beneath. But of course, their other task was to scare away evil spirits and remind passers by of their mortality and the demons they may dare face in Hell if they did not live a good Christian life!
This pair are obviously from the same building. They are wonderfully detailed with delft deep relief carving and incredibly delicate details such as the teeth remarkably still remaining intact.
There is some historical wear and an old repair to one of the beasts back. Size per mythical beast!
