Item Description
A large scale and emotive Corpus Christi sculpture, carved from Limewood c.1500.
Reflecting the transition from the late Gothic to the early Renaissance, a period when religious art combined emotional expression with anatomical realism.
Having distinctive flowing, naturalistic hair and beard split into two windings - an early sign of the beginning of the Renaissance. The finely carved drapery suggest influences from Northern Italy or border regions. These areas often merged Gothic traditions with emerging Renaissance ideals, shaped by both Italian and Central European workshops.
With many traces of original polychrome darkened and worn with time.
The emphasis on Christ’s suffering, paired with a serene expression, aligns with the Catholic Church’s focus on pathos and spirituality during the late Gothic era. He would have originally been created for a rural chapel or private devotional setting for personal worship.
Size below inc. stand. Figure is 100cm high. Stand base 26 cm wide x 25 cm deep.
