Item Description
An exquisite rare pair of Val d’Osne cast iron garden urns, No.98 Plate 479 from the 1866 Val d’Osne Catalogue.
We have only come across this model twice in 30 years! Making this an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire a remarkable piece of 19th-century craftsmanship. Adorned with intricately detailed horned satyr heads, these urns exemplify the elegance and artistry of the period. The original layers of paint, now charmingly weathered with delicate flaking, further enhancing their historical significance.
Satyrs, mythological beings intimately associated with Dionysian revelry and the natural world, were popular ornamental motifs in the 19th century. Their inclusion in these urns reflects the era’s fascination with classical mythology and its capacity to imbue garden decor with both grandeur and a whimsical character. The satyr heads evoke notions of fertility, vitality, and the rustic charm of nature, adding a sophisticated touch and a sense of timeless artistry.
The Val d’Osne foundry, established in 1835 by Jean Pierre Andre Victor, was a pioneering force in the realm of ornamental cast iron. With its workshops in Val d'Osne and its esteemed gallery at 58th Boulevard Voltaire in Paris, the foundry swiftly attained prominence. Val d’Osne’s innovations in cast iron techniques set new standards for decorative and sculptural work, leading it to become the largest and most influential foundry in France during the 19th century. These urns are not merely garden ornaments but rare artefacts from an era when Val d’Osne was at the zenith of industrial artistry. Perfect for collectors, interior decorators, landscape designers, or connoisseurs of historical garden decor, they promise to be magnificent centrepieces in any setting.
