Item Description

A rare collector's item from 1809, this Regency period “Highway Robbery” ‘broadside’ poster is remarkably preserved.

The broadside would have originally been printed to nail to a door or tree to advertise the reward for convicting the criminal who committed this dastardly deed.

The ‘Highway Robbery’ took place in the area of Malton and Castle Howard, then known as 'Henderskelf', where John Kirby was robbed by a 'Foot-pad' (a foot-bound highwayman) wearing white trousers and a military cap.

John Kirby was carrying a substantial hoard-including a promissory note for 30 pounds-today’s equivalent being the way for approximately two-hundred days work for a skilled tradesman.

Incredibly the back of the paper bears the imprint of a knotted wooden surface it has been in contact with for years.

Provenance can be traced back to the historic 'Ombersley Court' in Worcester by descent.
