Item Description
An exquisite late 17th to early 18th-century or possibly earlier limestone statue of the philosopher Aristotle is a stunning example of classical artistry. Created in Italy, it draws inspiration from Greek antiquity, beautifully capturing the wisdom and legacy of one of history’s greatest thinkers.
The statue has excellent provenance, having been part of a noble family's private collection at Château de Percy-Le-Pautel in France. It was a prominent feature in the château’s gardens, adding to its historical and cultural value.
The 12th century Chateau was restored from 1758 for Heudelot de Lettancourt.
It belonged to several families: Potier de Pommeroy, Count & Mayor of Percey, senator and deputy
of the Haute-Marne from 1843 to 1848; The Serrigny family, whose general, Bernard de Serrigny was the chief of staff of Marshal Pétain during the First World War.
Blending art and philosophy in one magnificent work. Whether displayed in a private collection, garden, or gallery, this piece will serve as a striking focal point.
Having resided in the gardens of Château de Percy-Le-Pautel for centuries, the statue remains in excellent condition, with natural weathering consistent with its age. The limestone has developed a natural patina, further enhancing its charm.
