Item Description
Switzerland, Baden, 16th Century
A striking lead and silver stained glass window depicting The Arms of Heinrich Bodmer of Baden and dated c.1580.
A central armorial crest illustrates a rampant lion; helmet and billowing plumage. Flanked by decorative scrolled columns supported by Atlante figures, with recumbent cherubs resting on skulls and cross bones.
The top of the panel is emblazoned with a blue cartouche with a central caryatid, with naked draped cherubs surrounded by fruiting garlands.
Beyond the armorial are allegorical scenes of landscape and religious and important figures of the period.
For more than two centuries, Swiss craftsmen were preeminent in the field in heraldic glass production. They meticulously created coats of arms for individuals, families, cantons, and guilds, often drawing inspiration from contemporary engravings and paintings for their designs.
A similar example can be found in the Cleveland Museum of Art. 1954.150.
