Item Description
Delightful 17th.c. oak livery cupboard c.1660. Reduced in height (there would originally have been a low open shelf below where the legs now finish) to make a useful little side cabinet. Two plank top with a moulded edge over a two door cupboard with a central divider and a single shelf inside (internal depth 14½", shelf depth 9½"). Original carved decoration, featuring beautiful lunette frieze above the doors and continued on the sides. Restrained cross motif to the door panels and the fixed centre panel which is raised and fielded. Note also the palmate carving running the length of the front stiles. Side panels pierced with scores of small holes designed to provide ventilation for the 'livery' (an allowance of food and drink) stored within. The corner stiles all continue to the ground, as turned members at the front and with just a simple moulded detail to the front face at the rear. Original oak shelf and back panel. Very good condition, with lovely colour and patina. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
