Item Description
18th Century Rouen enamelled earthenware semi-circular ‘Bassin’ or Jardiniere. This delightful hand painted, highly decorative piece has two mascot – shaped handles with intricate decoration of foliage. There is some minor damage to this piece as photographed, but it almost adds to the appeal of this rare piece.
Rouen earthenware really became extremely popular and sought after due to the revolutionist Masséot Abaquesne. Born in Cherbourg around 1500, he became the first grand master potter, his tenure in Sotteville-lès-Rouen from 1524 to 1557 enabled the development of earthenware production in Rouen.
