Item Description
Staddle stones, also known as steddle stones, were initially used as supportive foundations for various structures such as granaries, hayricks, and game larders. Elevating the structures above ground level, these stones safeguarded stored grain from pests and moisture. Primarily prevalent in Great Britain, they are also found in Norway as well as in Galicia and Asturias in Northern Spain. I can vouch for these in Northern Spain whilst walking the Camino, they were still be used for private farms granary stores!
Staddle stones typically comprised distinct heads and bases, resulting in an overall resemblance to mushrooms. Various regions across the United Kingdom showcased unique designs. Bases ranged from cylindrical to tapered rectangular to nearly triangular.
This is a delightful set of staddle stones, well over several centuries old. With fabulous lichen patina and real age to this set, these are a real garden statement set.
