Item Description

The rare first world war period convex parabolic mirror or reflector, with a later rope twist frame, the plate having etched marks around the circumference partially reading C A Parsons & Co 1915, with the back boards dated to 1947, the whole surviving from the first quarter of the twentieth century.

The mirror is in useable order only with minor spotting and wear in line with age. The rope twist frame was probably added in 1947 when the backboards were added, possibly again for use in the second World War.

C. A. Parsons and Company was a British engineering firm which was once one of the largest employers on Tyneside. During the First World War, the Parsons’ Works on Shields Road employed a large number of women on the factory floor. Parsons also patented and made novel searchlight mirrors between 1894 and 1923 and this was a naval nautical search light reflector mirror.

A scarce piece of naval history and a decorative wall adornment.
