Item Description
Circa 1890. Pair of superb quality late Victorian marquetry inlaid satinwood coffee tables by Edwards and Roberts, Piccadilly, London. The oval tops with mahogany boxwood and ebony banding and central satinwood panels with exquisite marquetry inlay of musical instruments, surrounded by husk chains and ribbon bound foliate garlands. With chequered fore-edges over inlaid splayed feet with a crinoline under-stretchers, Bearing label ‘Edwards and Roberts, Piccadilly, London’.
Edwards and Roberts were founded in 1845 and became established as amongst the highest quality cabinet makers in Europe, By the time they made this pair of tables in the late 19th century they were one of the leading firms of English cabinetmakers. These tables are typical of their copies of earlier English Georgian furniture, favouring classical Georgian designs such as Sheraton and with extensive use of satinwood and neo-classical marquetry inlay. Amongst their patrons were Queen Victoria, The Duke of Cambridge, Tsar Nicholas 11, and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
