Item Description

A country landscape of Witley, Surrey (near Godalming) by Charles James Lewis (1830-1892). Signed lower right, 'C. J. Lewis | Witley - Surrey June 2 1886'.

Charles James Lewis (1830 – 1892) was an English painter in oils and watercolours. He first exhibited in 1853, when at the Royal Academy of Art he showed a portrait of "Miss Shelton". She was Mary Ann Matilda Hammond Shelton, whom he married in 1854. He became a painter of rustic genre scenes and of landscape, and his works were very popular. He was a prolific artist, and a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy (49 pictures shown up to 1890), at the Society of British Artists (43 pictures up to 1884), and at the British Institution (49 pictures up to 1867); his works were also shown at other London exhibitions. His pictures were usually signed "C. J. Lewis”.

C. J. Lewis was fond of the scenes around Witley having painted several works from the area. This idyllic scene is full of detail including the horses and cart traversing the track in the far distance and buzzards over the woodland. The sky and trees are extremely well painted and of particular note. The work is housed in a later gilt frame which has a light area of marking to the bottom section (please see photographs) but otherwise remains in a good attractive condition.
