Item Description
An outstanding pair of large and substantial early George III sterling silver sauce boats, fully hallmarked for the respected silversmith Abraham Portal, London, 1768. Portal's pieces are known to have been gifted to royals and dignitaries of the period. Several examples of Abraham Portal's fine work are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, including a single sauceboat of this design.
Each sauce boat has a scalloped rim above three finely cast hoof feet. The handle boasts foliate detail to the top and scroll work to the lower half with the whole piece terminating in a simple but elegantly formed spout. Monogram present to the side of both boats.
One boat has an slight excess bow to the two rear legs but this is does not impact its sturdiness in any way, it has merely caused a lift to the to foot extremity (please see photographs). The other boat has a small dink to the monogram. Generally both remain in a very good condition.
A scarce pair.
