William Black was a self taught artist and sculptor who lived and worked in Cornwall. Black originally trained as an architect, and moved to Cornwall after the war. He was loosely associated with the St Ives group and he knew artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. He was a close friend of the artist John Turnnard, who also worked on the fringes of the St Ives group. Black’s metal sculptures are abstracted in form and often incorporate pieces of copper which move and swing giving them a mobile quality. His paintings often depict colourful Cornish scenes painted in a deconstructed abstract style.
