Item Description
A Brilliant life size abstract after ''The Birth of Venus" by Boticelli.
Painted by the known British artist Dunbar Marshall RBA 1918-2001. Signed and dated 1961. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1963.
Oil on Board. Mounted in giltwood Frame. 187cm x 65cm Framed.
Born in Florence, Italy, as Francis Dunbar Marshall-Malagola. He attended Westminster School of Art prior to World War II, under Mark Gertler and Bernard Meninsky, then Chelsea School of Art, 1948–52, with Ceri Richards and Robert Medley. He did some teaching, 1954–67, then from 1967–86 was with UNESCO as secretary-general of the International Association of Art. He was a member of the RBA and Salon d’Automne and friendships with Miró, Vasarely and Alexander Calder were cited as important. Showed with RA, Free Painters and Sculptors and elsewhere in mixed exhibitions, having solo shows at Grabowski Gallery, 1961 and 1964; UNESCO, Paris, 1985; and Prévôt Gallery, Paris, 1986 and 1992. Contemporary art museums in Biha´c and Skopje, Yugoslavia; Ło´dz´, Poland; Japan Artists’ Association; and other collections hold examples.
