Item Description
Early C19th ‘Grand Tour’ statue of ‘Diane de Gabies’, finely carved in Carrara marble. Diane stood next to a tree stump with her hair tied back and her head tilted to the right where she is fixing the clasp on her tunic. A fine quality example in excellent condition.
This statue is a copy of a Roman marble of the Hellenistic period (fourth to second century BC) discovered by the English artist Gavin Hamilton in 1792 during excavations in the grounds of the Borghese family residence in the village of Gabies, near Rome. The antique marble was later sold to Napoleon I by the Borghese and in 1820 it was sent to the Musée du Louvre where it remains.
