Item Description
This beautifully detailed bronze was made and signed by S. Bechhof.
Please take a look at all our photographs to see the intricate details. The Penny Farthing is complete with pedals, handlebars and a seat. The expression and facial hair of the rider is just brilliant.
An accomplished sculpture and a piece that captures British cycling history.
This would make a great gift for a collector of bikes and cycling memorabilia.
Penny Farthing's were widely used during the 1860s, 1870s and 1880s by wealthy gentlemen. The large front wheel made it more comfortable to ride over cobbles, stones and the uneven roads of the 19th century. However, it was far more difficult to mount and dismount - and falling off was quite a hazard!
The development of the Rover Safety Bicycle and the invention of the pneumatic tyre in the late 1880s led to the decline of the Penny Farthing into the early 20th century. However, enthusiasts still collect and ride them today.
