Item Description
An 18th Century French Oak Coffer of Gothic Inspiration.
This superb coffer is of excellent size and good proportions. The timber used has attained an excellent colour and it retains lovely, original metalwork such as the long hinges inside the lid and the escutcheon plate to the front. The gothic carving which is on the front of the coffer was clearly inspired by church architecture, the maker of this piece has made a series of arched gothic windows, with a central rose window underneath the escutcheon. Continuing the church theme, the front feet on the coffer are carved with mythical gargoyle-like beasts. The carving is of great depth and this high relief is a sign of additional quality on the part of the carver.
