Item Description
An 18th Century French Painted Settee with Original Tapestry Upholstery with Animal Themes.
This fine settee has a blue and cream paint scheme and the original tapestry upholstery. The tapestry was probably made by one of the Aubusson workshops and consists of a series of bird subjects on the back; geese, chickens and jays. On the seat panel is a leopard being pursued by dogs. The tapestry survives in sound condition, the seat slightly more worn than the back as expected.
The frame of the settee, with its mellow and attractive paint scheme, has a slightly serpentine front rail and a square back in the classic Louis XVI manner.
Finding tapestry upholstery of this sort in such fine condition is very unusual and rare. W also have a pair of armchairs of associated pattern, also with their original tapestry, that would make a wonderful matched set. (See #3668).
