Item Description
A Beautifully Carved English George III Period Mahogany Tea Table.
This fine table opens on a single gate leg mechanism, meaning that one of the back legs swings out of the table frame to support the top. The table is made from the highest grade of Cuban mahogany and has a fantastic colour throughout. All of the surfaces show a bronze-like patination and the figure on the top and inside the opened tea table surface is excellent as well. The carving is exemplary. The top is bordered on three sides with a fine floral and ribbon edge. The corner blocks to the end of the frieze have a geometric paterae design carved on them inside a mock panelled border. The rest of the decoration, both on the frieze and the legs, consists of fluting which is deeply carved and elegant.
During the 18th century the style of decoration used on this table would have been classified by Chippendale and his competitors as being in the 'modern' or French style. This table, with its excellent proportions, very fine grade of timber and masterful carving would have been produced for a wealthy client.
