Item Description
An Interesting 18th Century Italian Walnut Inlaid Commode.
This lovely commode has three equally-sized drawers, all with intricately inlaid panels to the fronts with geometric banding combined with central floral inlay. Surrounding these central drawer panels are panels of contrasting geometric crossbanding, the whole creating a very rich effect.
The top of the piece combines quarter veneered binding with parquetry diamonds and half diamonds, surrounding two panels with the same borders as on the drawer fronts. In the centre of these panels are two marvellous inlaid designs. These designs were highly influential amongst firms specialising in marquetry for furniture, Ince and Mayhew in England making particular use of it in this country. It is interesting to see this particularly Italian use of the design and the quality of these panels is quite exceptional.
A very attractive and interesting commode.
